Young female is having video call with her male doctor checking her temperature while social distancing and quarantine

What is Virtual Care?

Virtual care means getting health advice, diagnoses, prescriptions, or follow-ups through technology like your phone, tablet, or computer. No travel, no waiting room. Just you and a health care provider, connected through video, phone, or secure messaging.

It might look like:

  • Scheduling a video call with your family doctor
  • Having a phone consultation about test results with a health care provider
  • Using a trusted online platform to receive health care advice

Virtual care isn’t replacing traditional health care; it’s expanding it. It’s one more way to get trusted care.

Virtual care for unaffiliated patients

Currently, free virtual health care is offered to Islanders without a primary care provider through our verified Virtual Care online platform. To qualify you must be:

  • Registered on the Provincial Patient Registry
  • Living in PEI
  • Without a primary care provider

On the platform, doctors can:

  • Assess and treat common health issues
  • Prescribe medications (except controlled substances)
  • Order tests (blood work, x-rays)
  • Provide sick notes
  • Some situations may require care in-person, in those cases, the Virtual Care physician online will refer you to in-person care.

You can access Virtual Care from Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Get more information here.
