Your Rights: What PEI’s Health Information Act Means for You
The Prince Edward Island’s Health Information Act (HIA):
- Defines what personal health information (PHI) is and what it includes.
- Sets the rules for how personal health information is:
- collected (e.g., at health care appointments)
- used (e.g., to provide you with the right care, treatments, and health services)
- protected (e.g., ensure only those who need to know your information can access it)
- disclosed or shared with others (e.g., billing the provincial health plan for the services you received)
- Establishes your rights regarding your personal health information.
What are those rights?
Under the Act, you have the right to:
- Know what personal health information (e.g., medical history, test results, etc.) is part of your record
- Look at or get a copy of your health record, and if something is wrong or missing, you can ask for it to be fixed
- See who has looked at your electronic health record
- Ask Health PEI or another custodian holding your PHI to:
- tell you how your PHI is protected, used, and who it is shared with
- tell you if your health information is lost, stolen, or viewed by someone who shouldnfuture health tools and technologies more effectively.
