What are AI scribes?
An AI scribe is a digital tool that creates a draft summary “note” for your healthcare provider based on your conversation during an appointment.
Instead of your health care provider taking notes during your appointment, the AI scribe creates a temporary audio recording and draft summary. It helps ensure that important health-related details, no matter how small, are noted. By using an AI scribe your health care provider can focus more on you and less on taking notes.
The AI scribe tool will not make decisions about your care; it only summarizes the medically relevant information from your appointment. Your provider will review and edit the summary and choose what to add to your electronic medical record.
Your provider will ask for your consent before using this digital tool during your appointment. If you choose not to consent, it won’t affect the quality of care you receive. And there is no rush – if you feel more comfortable later, you can always change your mind and give your permission then.
Currently, some PEI health care providers are participating in a national AI Scribe pilot project led by Canada Health Infoway. If you’re interested in learning more about AI scribes or the pilot project, check out the resources below.
