What is Digital Health Literacy and Why Does It Matter?

Digital health literacy—let's break this term down.

Digital health refers to the use of technology to support health care. Think anything from the Apple Watch or Fitbit on your wrist, to the electronic medical record (EMR) your health care provider uses, or to being able to book a bloodwork or mammogram appointment online.

Digital health literacy means knowing how to find, understand, and use trustworthy digital health tools and health information accessed online.

So, why should digital health literacy matter to you?

  • The world is going digital – Tried, tested, traditional health care methods are not going anywhere. But more and more digital health tools are supporting our health care system, and we all need some basic skills to take advantage of them.
  • Staying informed is important – It is easier than ever to get health information online. But being able to find reliable information and understand your own health data will help you avoid misinformation and make informed decisions.
  • Saves time; increases convenience – Whether it’s booking appointments or sharing information with your primary care provider, digital health tools can help make accessing and receiving the care you need easier.
  • Privacy and protection – You are the owner of your health information. Knowing how to safely use these digital health tools will help you keep your information secure.

Digital health literacy gives you more control, confidence, and convenience when it comes to your health and well-being.
